Exit intent

A signal that the visitor is about to close the tab, detected from cursor movement toward the browser chrome. As a trigger it works when the person already showed interest; on a fresh arrival it is just an interruption.

The detection is mundane: the cursor accelerating toward the top edge of the viewport, where the tab bar and the address bar are. On touch devices there is no equivalent signal, so it usually degrades to scroll direction and idle time.

As a trigger it works in exactly one situation: the visitor already showed interest and is leaving without acting. Fired on a fresh arrival it is noise, and it teaches people to dismiss the widget on sight.

What the message offers matters more than the timing. A discount conditions people to leave first; an answer to the question that actually stalled them (delivery time, contract length, whether it integrates with the tool they already use) recovers the visit without discounting the product.
